Crossing the River to School
How do you get to school? Do you walk or ride a bike? Do you go by bus or by train? For many students, it is easy to get to school. But for the students in one small village in China, it is difficult. There is a very big river between their school and the village. There is no bridge and the river runs too quickly for boats. So these students go on a ropeway to cross the river to school.
One 11-year-old boy, Liangliang, crosses the river every school day. But he is not afraid because he loves school. “ I love to play with my classmates. And I love my teacher. He’s like a father to me.”
Many of the students and villagers never leave the village. It is their dream to have a bridge. Can their dream come true?
Read the story again and answer the questions.
1. How do the students in the village go to school?
They go on a ropeway to cross the river to school.

1. There is a very big river between their school and the village. 學(xué)校和村莊之間有條大河。
there be側(cè)重于客觀存在的“有”，強(qiáng)調(diào)存在的狀態(tài)。在there be結(jié)構(gòu)中，主語(yǔ)應(yīng)放在be動(dòng)詞之后，并且be動(dòng)詞的形式應(yīng)與主語(yǔ)保持一致。
如：There are many apples on the tree.
【拓展】
have側(cè)重于主觀方面，強(qiáng)調(diào)“所屬” 關(guān)系，表示“擁有，占有，具有”。在這一結(jié)構(gòu)中，have與主語(yǔ)保持人稱和數(shù)的一致。
如：She has a nice schoolbag.
between … and … 在……與……之間
between 是個(gè)介詞，表示在兩者之間。
如：Mary is between Jane and Linda in the line.
在隊(duì)伍中，瑪麗在簡(jiǎn)和琳達(dá)之間。
2. There is no bridge and the river runs too quickly for boats.
河上根本沒(méi)有橋，而且水流很急，不適宜小船擺渡。
（1） no “完全不、根本沒(méi)有”，在這里構(gòu)成否定句。當(dāng)no 用于構(gòu)成否定句，主要用于名詞前，強(qiáng)調(diào)否定其后面的名詞。如：
There is no apple in the fridge.
冰箱里沒(méi)有蘋果了。
(2) run 在這里表示“液體流動(dòng)”。
它在不同的語(yǔ)境中有不同的用法和含義。例如：
Who runs the business? 生意是誰(shuí)經(jīng)營(yíng)的?
“run”表示 “管理；經(jīng)營(yíng)”

3. One 11-year-old boy, Liangliang, crosses the river every school day.

注意：這里的“year，day，page”都是用單數(shù)。

（1）be afraid...害怕的
The girl is very afraid. 小女孩很害怕。
（2）be afraid of … 害怕 ……
My sister is afraid of snakes.

5. He’s like a father to me.
他對(duì)我來(lái)說(shuō)就像一位父親。
like 在這里作介詞，而不是動(dòng)詞，意為“像”。
The fish looks like a big boat. 那條魚看起來(lái)像條船 。（介詞）
Jane likes history very much. 簡(jiǎn)很喜歡歷史。（動(dòng)詞）
