Language Points
1. allow sb. to do sth. 允許某人做某事
allow doing sth. 允許做某事
(sb.) be allowed to do sth. (某人)被允許做某事
2. No way!
no way 意思是“不;決不,沒門”,表示對對方要求的一種回絕。語氣比no重。
►Give up our tea break? No way!
讓我們放棄工間休息時間?沒門兒!
►No way will I go on working for that man.
我不再給那個人工作了。
3. I don’t think sixteen-year-olds should be allowed to drive.
我認(rèn)為16歲的孩子們不應(yīng)該被準(zhǔn)許駕車。
英語中有少數(shù)表示“猜想、臆斷”的實義動詞,如think, believe, suppose, imagine等,后面跟含否定意義的賓語從句時,習(xí)慣上把從句的否定轉(zhuǎn)移到主句,構(gòu)成“I don’t think /…”結(jié)構(gòu)。這種語言現(xiàn)象稱為否定轉(zhuǎn)移。
sixteen-year-olds 十六歲的孩子們
相當(dāng)于名詞短語 sixteen-year-old children,
“一個16歲孩子”的表達(dá)方式:
a child of sixteen
a child of sixteen years old
a sixteen-year-old child
4. safety n. 安全;安全性
►It’s very important to teach the children about road safety.
把交通安全常識教給孩子們是非常重要的。
►We’re keeping you here for your own safety.
我們讓你待在這里是為了你自身的安全。
►Don’t worry about him. He is in safety.
別擔(dān)心他,他很安全。
5. get their ears pierced
這是“get+名詞(或代詞)+過去分詞”的句型,意思是“使……被做,請人做……”,表示讓別人做某事。此時get 是使役動詞。
►I can’t get the work done by anybody.
我找不到人來干這項工作。
►When are you going to get your hair cut?
你打算什么時候去剪頭發(fā)?
“get+名詞(或代詞)+過去分詞”的句型,還可以表示“遭遇某事”。
►I got my car repaired.
我讓人修理了我的汽車。
►James got beaten last night.
詹姆斯昨晚被打了。
►He got his wrist broken.
他折斷了手腕。
