How many basic rules should be remembered when parents leave a child alone? What are they? 

They should remember the following basic rules:

1. Leave a contact telephone number.

2. Talk to the child about keeping safe at home and point out possible dangers.

3. Tell the child not to answer the door to strangers.

4. Give clear instructions about how to call the police, fire service or hospital.

5. Put obvious dangers out of reach of the child, for example, medicines and matches.

6. Tell the child when they will come back and make sure they are back on time.
