Skimming and scanning are two fast reading skills to help to browse text and extract the key points.
The skills require practice, but once you have got the hang of them you’ll find you can get through a substantial amount of reading in quite a short time.
These reading methods make it easier for you to grasp large amounts of materials, especially when you're previewing. They are also useful when you don't need to know every word.
通過略讀把握文章大意
略讀(skimming)只看文章標(biāo)題、下標(biāo)題以及每個(gè)部分或者段落第一行，關(guān)注文章中反復(fù)出現(xiàn)的關(guān)鍵詞。
略讀時(shí)，要用充足的時(shí)間讀懂段落的第一句和第二句，因?yàn)榈谝痪渫窃摱蔚闹黝}句(topic sentence)，而第二句往往是對前句的延伸(extension)或進(jìn)一步的解釋(explanation)。
通過掃讀尋找特定信息或特定詞組
運(yùn)用掃讀(scanning)迅速瀏覽從第三句開始的后面部分，搜尋作者對開頭兩句的支持句(supporting sentences)，并同時(shí)注意文章中間是否有轉(zhuǎn)折詞(transition)，因?yàn)檫@些詞常常會把文章的思路逆轉(zhuǎn)或加入其它重要的信息。當(dāng)讀到段落的最后一句時(shí)，我們又要使用略讀，這時(shí)必須再次放慢速度(slow down your pace)直到完全消化作者對段落的小結(jié)(conclusion)，因?yàn)樵撔〗Y(jié)有可能與主題句截然相反或引導(dǎo)讀者進(jìn)入下一個(gè)段落。

1. At 9:00 a.m., they find that most of the babies are already awake and hungry.
英語中，awake常用于be, stay, keep, lie之后，作表語；但也可與shake等動詞搭配，表“某人搖醒他人”等：
你得把她給搖醒。
You would have to shake her awake.
注意：awake不用于名詞之前，因此用作定語時(shí)要后置。
她是最后一個(gè)醒著的人。
She was the last person awake.
他是當(dāng)時(shí)唯一醒著的男孩。
He was the only one boy awake at that time.
另外，awake不與very搭配使用，表示“完全醒來；十分清醒”用fully awake，wide awake。如：
等我們到達(dá)我的住所時(shí)，他已經(jīng)完全清醒過來了。
He was wide awake by the time we reached my flat.
她站起身，但還沒有完全清醒。
She rose, still not quite fully awake.
2. Adult pandas spend more than 12 hours a day eating about 10 kilos of bamboo.
1) 10 kilos of bamboo意為“10公斤竹子”，該結(jié)構(gòu)是不可數(shù)名詞量的表達(dá)法，其結(jié)構(gòu)為“數(shù)詞+單位名詞+of+名詞”。單位名詞可以是單數(shù)，也可以是復(fù)數(shù)。
2) spend … (in) doing sth.意為“花費(fèi)……做某事”。
They spent two years (in) building this bridge.
造這座橋花了他們兩年時(shí)間。
