1. separate

separate  v. 使分開;分離;隔開。常與from 搭配。如:

Separate the bad apples from the good ones.

把壞蘋果和好的分開。

England is separated from France by the Channel.

英吉利海峽把英國和法國分隔開。

We talked until midnight and then separated.

Nobody can separate Taiwan from China.

separate  adj. 獨(dú)自的、獨(dú)立的、各自的、分離的、分開的。如:

My little son wants a separate room.

我想聽你們每個(gè)人自己的看法。

2. explain

explain  v. 解釋,說明

Can you explain why you were late?

你能解釋一下你為什么遲到嗎?

He explained his plan in detail. 

他仔細(xì)地說明了自己的計(jì)劃。 

The lawyer explained the new law to us. 

律師向我們解釋了新法律。 

[注意]

“向某人說明某事”不用explain sb sth 結(jié)構(gòu),可用explain sth to sb 表示。

介詞引出間接賓語, 除了explain,還有 introduce,borrow。    explain sth. to sb. 

introduce A to B

borrow sth. from sb.

如果這個(gè)sth.較長(比如帶個(gè)定語或本身就是一個(gè)名詞性從句),為了句子的平衡,可將其后置成為:explain to sb. sth. (+定語),或explain to sb. that-從句。
