Adverb Clauses of Time
(時間狀語從句)
用來修飾謂語動詞、其他動詞、定語、狀語或整個句子的從句叫狀語從句。狀語從句有很多種，今天我們主要學(xué)習由when, while, before, after, as soon as, since, until引導(dǎo)的時間狀語從句。
when從句的動作可與主句的動作同時發(fā)生，也可先于主句的動作；從句的謂語動詞可以是延續(xù)性動詞，也可以是瞬間性動詞。并且when有時意為“就在那時”。如：
When I got home, he was watching TV.
當我到家的時候，他正在看電視。
Mozart started writing music when he was four years old.
當莫扎特四歲的時候，開始寫音樂作品。
I was about to go out when the telephone rang.
我剛要出門，電話鈴響了。
while只能指一段時間，而不能指時間點。從句的動作或與主句的動作同時發(fā)生，或主句的動作是在從句動作的過程中發(fā)生的。因此，從句中的動詞必須是表示延續(xù)性動作或狀態(tài)的動詞。如：
While I was sleeping, my brother came in.
當我在睡覺的時候，我弟弟進來了。
He visited a lot of places while he was traveling.
他在旅途中參觀了許多地方。

when和while 的區(qū)別
when與while 都意為“當……的時候”。when 引導(dǎo)的時間狀語從句, 謂語動詞既可以是持續(xù)性的, 也可以是終止性的；而while引導(dǎo)的時間狀語從句, 謂語動詞只能是持續(xù)性的, 并且常用進行時態(tài)。試比較：
When he woke up, it was eight o’clock．
While he woke up, it was eight o’clock．
When I was waiting for a bus, I met her．
While I was waiting for a bus, I met her．
before表示主句的動作發(fā)生在從句之前。如:
I won’t tell you the truth before he comes back.
他回來之前我是不會告訴你事實的。
after表示主句的動作發(fā)生在從句的動作之后。如：
After she finished the work, she went to have supper.
她完成工作后去吃晚飯了。
