2. To learn how to politely decline requests and master interpersonal skills.

Grammar

Activity-1  Look at the sentences from the reading and answer the questions.

a. Disappointed by his behaviour, I said all this to my best friend. 

b. Approached in this way, your friendship will soon be repaired. 

1. Who was disappointed in sentence (a)? What is approached in sentence (b)?

2. Why does the author use -ed instead of -ing here?

Activity-2  Compare them with the following sentences and answer the questions. And look for more sentences with -ed as adverbial in the reading passage.

c. Because I was disappointed by his behaviour, I said all this to my best friend. 

d. If it is approached in this way, your friendship will soon be repaired.

3 What is the difference between the two groups of sentences?

Language Points

1. Believing/ Believed that she is Riley’s most important emotion, Joy always tries to take the lead.

[句式分析]本句話主語是Joy,與believe之間的邏輯關(guān)系是主動,故用現(xiàn)在分詞表達(dá)主動關(guān)系,因此選擇現(xiàn)在分詞believing作狀語(本句是原因狀語)。

[嘗試翻譯] Joy相信她是Riley最重要的情緒,(因此)總是試圖起到領(lǐng)導(dǎo)作用。

2.Worried about her, Joy and Sadness try to work together to ensure she gets her core memories back.

[句式分析] 本句話中狀語worried about完整形式是“be worried about”,由于是帶有be動詞的短語,故作狀語時直接去掉be動詞即可。

[嘗試翻譯] Joy和Sadness很擔(dān)心她,(因此)嘗試共同合作,確保她(Riley)能夠?qū)⒅匾洃浭盎亍?/p>
