Table manners around the world.

There are many table manners around the world. But different countries have different culture. 

1a Take the following quiz. Circle “T” (for true) or “F” (for false) after each sentence.

Mind your manners!

1. In India, you’re supposed to eat with your hands.

2. In China, you are not supposed to stick your chopsticks into the food. 

3. In Korea, the youngest person is expected to start eating first. 

4. In France, you’re supposed to put your bread on the table. 

5. In China, it’s impolite to use your chopsticks to hit an empty bowl.

2a What do you know about customs in foreign countries?

What do you think is the biggest challenge when visiting a foreign country? 

e.g. My cousin went to America, and she said that learning basic table manners was her biggest challenge. She never knew what she was supposed to do at the dinner table. 

2b Read the letter and answer the questions.  

1. Why is Lin Yue in France? 

She is an exchange student. 

2. Does she enjoy staying with her host family? How do you know?

Yes, she does. Because they go out of their way to make her feel at home.

3. How does she feel about making mistakes when she speaks French? 

It doesn't worry her like it used to. 

4. What is the biggest challenge she is facing? 

Learning how to behave at the dinner table.

2c Read the sentences and replace the underlined words with the phrases in the box.

Language points 

1.table manners 餐桌禮儀

manner 是  “禮貌”的意思, 常以復(fù)數(shù)形式出現(xiàn)。  如:

It’s bad manners to talk with a full mouth.

嘴里吃著東西說話是不禮貌的。

manner 還可以表示 “風(fēng)俗;習(xí)慣”, 也常以復(fù)數(shù)形式出現(xiàn)。

例如:The manners of the ancient Egyptians     

古埃及的風(fēng)俗習(xí)慣

manner 還可以表示 “方法;方式”  “態(tài)度;舉止”等意思。

如: Why are you talking in such a strange manner?

你為什么用這種奇怪的方式談話?

2. My biggest challenge is learning how to behave at the dinner table.    我最大的挑戰(zhàn)是學(xué)習(xí)餐桌上的禮儀。

behave 動(dòng)詞, 意思是 “表現(xiàn)”

The boy behaved very well last night.男孩昨晚表現(xiàn)挺好。

The little boy behaved with great courage in the face of gunman.   在持槍歹徒面前,這個(gè)小男孩表現(xiàn)得極有勇氣。

它還可以表示 “守規(guī)矩; 舉止適當(dāng)有禮”的意思。

如: Please behave yourself. 請(qǐng)禮貌點(diǎn)兒。

它的相應(yīng)的名詞是behavior, 意思是 “行為”!
