1. Once upon a time, there was a large, lovely garden.
從前，有一個美麗的大花園。
once upon a time意思是“從前；很久以前”，這是講故事常用的開頭語。
類似的表達還有l(wèi)ong, long ago, a long time ago等。
2. The giant cried in a loud voice.
這個巨人大聲地喊。
in a loud voice意思是“大聲地”；
in a low voice意是“低聲地”。
e.g. Linda sings in a loud voice.
琳達大聲地唱歌。
loud, loudly與aloud
loud adj. 意為“大聲的；響亮的”。
e.g. I couldn’t hear what he said because the radio was too loud.
副詞loud與loudly同義，都表示“大聲地”，但用法有些區(qū)別：
1. loud要放在動詞的后面，而loudly既可放在動詞之后，也可放在動詞之前。
e.g. Don’t talk so loud. Your brother is sleeping.
Jim played the drum loudly last night.
= Jim loudly played the drum last night.
2. loudly含有“喧鬧”或“嘈雜”的意味。
e.g. Suddenly someone shouted loudly. It annoyed us.
aloud也有“大聲地”之意，與loud，loudly有什么區(qū)別呢？
1. aloud側(cè)重于“出聲”這一含義，強調(diào)發(fā)出的聲音能被聽見。
e.g. Please read the passage aloud.
2. aloud與動詞cry, laugh, shout, speak等連用時，表示“大聲地”。
e.g. The baby is crying aloud. Maybe he is too hungry.

過去進行時
一、構(gòu)成
過去進行時由“助動詞be 的過去式was / were + v.-ing 形式”構(gòu)成，兩者缺一不可。主語是第一人稱或第三人稱單數(shù)時用was，其他的用were。
二、常見用法
★表示過去某一時刻正在進行或發(fā)生的動作。
如：
I was watching TV at seven yesterday evening.
He was doing his homework at that time yesterday.
★表示過去某一時間段內(nèi)持續(xù)發(fā)生的動作。如：
They were waiting for you yesterday.
★常用于含有when / while 引導(dǎo)的時間狀語從句的復(fù)合句中：when 與表示短暫性動作的動詞連用，主句用過去進行時；而while 與表示延續(xù)性動作的動詞連用，從句用過去進行時。如：
We were having supper when the phone rang.
The phone rang while she was sleeping.
三、過去進行時和一般過去時的區(qū)別：
過去進行時表示在過去某一時刻或某一時間段內(nèi)正在發(fā)生的動作，強調(diào)動作正在進行；一般過去時表示過去發(fā)生的動作，多側(cè)重于動作已完成。如：
She wrote an e-mail to her friend last night.
She was writing an e-mail to her friend at that time.
