Pre-reading

Look at the picture and choose the answers to the questions. There may be more than one answer.

Find sentences which show:

1. the three things the speaker has learnt

第三、第四、第五段的第一句:

從朋友處學(xué)到的東西可從第三段倒數(shù)第二/三句看出:

But they were not laughing at me. They taught me to say many things in Chinese and kindly invited me to join them.

從老師處學(xué)到的東西可從第四段第一句看出:

I give the white rose to my teachers, who have taught me that there is no success without effort.

從父母處學(xué)到的東西可從第五段第一句看出:

1 give the yellow rose to my parents for teaching me that love is about trust.

Language Points

1.I still can’t run fast enough, but I’ve learnt to try my best, not only with running but with whatever else I do.

(1)not only...but(also)... 不但……而且……在句中連接兩個(gè)并列的成分,強(qiáng)調(diào)后者,有時(shí) also 可以省略;注意:用于連接兩個(gè)并列主語(yǔ)時(shí),謂語(yǔ)動(dòng)詞的數(shù)應(yīng)與 but also 后主語(yǔ)的數(shù)保持一致,即 “就近原則”。

e.g. Not only Tom and I but also Mary is interested in watching TV.

不僅湯姆和我,而且瑪麗也對(duì)看電視感興趣。

(2)not only...but(also)... 連接兩個(gè)并列句子,當(dāng) not only 置于句首時(shí),第一個(gè)句子應(yīng)倒裝,將助動(dòng)詞/be動(dòng)詞/情態(tài)動(dòng)詞置于主語(yǔ)前。

e.g. Not only do we come to school on time every day, but also we must work hard.

我們不僅每天準(zhǔn)時(shí)到校,還必須努力學(xué)習(xí)。

try one’s best (to do sth.) 盡某人最大努力(做某事)

e.g. They tried their best to help the people in trouble.

他們盡了最大努力幫助在困難中的人們。

try的常見搭配:

try to do sth.  盡力做,努力做某事

try doing sth.  嘗試做某事

try sth. on  試穿

try out (for...)  參加……的選拔;試用

have a try  試一試(try作名詞)

2.I was disappointed.

disappointed adj. 失望的,沮喪的;修飾人,感到失望的

disappointing adj.修飾事物,令人失望的。

e.g.Thousands of fans were disappointed because they were unable to get

tickets for Jay Chou’s concert.

數(shù)千名粉絲很失望,因?yàn)樗麄儧]能得到周杰倫演唱會(huì)的門票。

In summary, this was a disappointing performance. 

總的來(lái)說(shuō),這場(chǎng)演出令人失望。

We were all disappointed at/by her failure.

我們都為她的失敗而感到失望。
